What's happening right now?

Locked out

Safely, right now

  1. Wait somewhere safe and warm: a neighbour's, your car, a coffee shop.
  2. Don't force a window or the door; it only adds a repair.
  3. Keep ID that shows your address handy if it is with you.

Key broke in the lock

Safely, right now

  1. Leave the lock alone: pushing the piece further in makes it harder to get out.
  2. Keep the piece you still have. It helps cut a new key.

Lock won't turn

Safely, right now

  1. Don't force the key. A bent or broken key makes it harder.
  2. Don't spray oil or glue into it, and don't pour hot water on it in the cold.

Lost keys

Safely, right now

  1. Keys lost together with your address? Assume someone could use them.
  2. Don't hide a spare key anywhere outside in the meantime, not even under the mat.

A small apartment building, a clinic with six rooms, a shop with a back office: each in Cleardale benefits from one key that opens everything and individual keys that open only what they should. We design the system, pin the cylinders, and record who holds which key so it stays manageable. Calls from Glendale are covered too.

The fix, explained · Cleardale

What is the door doing?

EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceThe key slides in and turns all the way round, but the bolt stays put.

The fix

Different locks call for different openings, and a lockout visit starts by reading the hardware on your door. A spring latch in a knob or lever behaves differently from a deadbolt, a mortise lock in an older home has its own internals, and a high-security cylinder resists shortcuts that work on builder-grade hardware.

EmergencyBusiness Lockout ServiceMinus eighteen with a wind, and the exterior cylinder on the shop door has frozen solid overnight after yesterday's slush.

The fix

Heavy commercial doors move, and a good share of business lockouts are really door problems. A glass storefront door hangs on pivots or a continuous hinge that wear with thousands of openings a week, and once the door drops a few millimetres the hookbolt or latch binds against its strike.

EmergencyBroken Key ExtractionThe padlock on the shed has been stiff all summer.

The fix

If a key has just snapped in your lock, the most helpful thing you can do is nothing further to the lock. Keep the half in your hand, note whether the door is locked, and resist the tweezers and the glue, both of which push the piece deeper and add material the locksmith must clear first.

EmergencyBreak-In Damage Lock RepairThey did not get in.

The fix

In a rental or condo the repair involves more than one set of hands. A tenant reports the break-in to the landlord or property manager, who normally arranges the work, because landlords are responsible for repairs and both sides have rules about changing locks and sharing keys.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningIt is the coldest morning of the winter and the key goes halfway into the side door and stops.

The fix

A lock rarely seizes without warning. It asks for a wiggle, then a firmer wiggle, then it needs the door pulled toward you, and one morning it stops.

EmergencyLost Keys — Same-Visit RekeyThe keys fell out of a gym bag somewhere between the arena and the parking lot.

The fix

When a key disappears, cutting yourself another copy solves the wrong half of the problem. You can get in again, but so can whoever finds the original.

  2. 2 Questions

    Listening to the door's history

Has it been forced, does it drag, who has had keys? Those answers tell us whether the frame, the cylinder or the key list needs attention first.

  3. 3 On the way

    In the van

    • Pick and tension tools
    • Replacement cylinder or deadbolt
    • Plug spinner
    • Broken key extractors
    • Strike plate and long hinge screws
  4. 4 Fixed

Testing every key in every lock

Reinforcing what takes the blow. A box strike and three-inch screws into the studs, long hinge screws, and filled holes where the wood has split, before any cylinder is changed.

Testing every key in every lock. Doors open, doors closed, both sides, then a push on the locked door to feel for play. We finish by writing down what was fitted.

What the census means at the door

52%

Older homes. About 52% of homes in London were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Basement and side entries on older homes were often fitted long after the house was built, with whatever lock was on hand. Bringing those doors up to the standard of the front entry, and onto the same key, is a common and satisfying job.

49%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 49% of homes in London (2021 Census).

Neighbourhoods of houses beside townhouses and low-rise buildings have a range of door constructions: solid wood, steel, fibreglass and metal-clad. A locksmith who works in such an area is used to fitting hardware to all of them without new holes.

  • A locksmith who listens. The job starts with your description, not our assumptions. What you have noticed about the door often points to the cause before we touch it.

  • Honest about what is worth doing. Some hardware deserves saving and some does not. We tell you which and why, so you spend on what makes a difference.

  • Left better than found. The door works, the area is clean and you have keys, notes and a clear idea of what to watch for. That is the standard for every visit.

Advice · (226) 777-6122

Do I have to show identification before you open my door?

Yes, and it is a reassuring step rather than a hurdle. Photo identification that matches the address settles it in seconds. When your identification still carries a previous address, other proof does the job: a tenancy agreement, a recent bill, a piece of addressed mail, or a word with your building manager. Locksmiths take this seriously because it protects every home they are asked to open, including yours.

We have lost a master key. Is that different from losing an ordinary key?

Yes, because a master key opens every lock in its group, so one missing key touches many doors. The response is planned rather than rushed: the locksmith maps which cylinders the key operated, works with the property manager if the system is building-wide, and re-pins or swaps cores across the group so a new master takes over. Manufacturers' guidance on key control treats retrieving and tracking master keys as the foundation of the whole system.

Why did the frame break instead of the lock?

Because that is where the weak point was. A standard strike plate is held by two short screws in a soft wood jamb, and the deadbolt only reaches into a shallow pocket behind it. A kick delivers the full weight of a body to those screws, and the wood around them splits along the grain. The bolt itself is rarely the failure. That is why the repair concentrates on the strike side: a boxed strike, a full-depth pocket and long screws into the stud.

What do backset and bore mean, and why does the locksmith ask?

Two measurements decide whether a deadbolt fits your door. Bore is the diameter of the big hole through the face, 54 mm on most current hardware. Backset is how far the centre of that hole sits from the door's edge, 60 mm or 70 mm on nearly all residential doors. A replacement must match both to use the existing holes, and a fresh installation is cut to match the knob below, so knowing them ahead puts the right hardware on the van.
