It is minus fifteen, the wind is coming across the driveway, and the key will only go halfway into the deadbolt. Yesterday's thaw left water in the keyway and overnight it froze solid. Forcing it only makes the metal flex.

An inherited safe with no combination, a dial that has drifted, an electronic keypad that stopped responding: each has a proper way in that preserves the box. We open, service and reset safes for homes and small businesses, and explain the upkeep.

The fix, explained · London
The fix
Different locks call for different openings, and a lockout visit starts by reading the hardware on your door. A spring latch in a knob or lever behaves differently from a deadbolt, a mortise lock in an older home has its own internals, and a high-security cylinder resists shortcuts that work on builder-grade hardware.
The fix
Heavy commercial doors move, and a good share of business lockouts are really door problems. A glass storefront door hangs on pivots or a continuous hinge that wear with thousands of openings a week, and once the door drops a few millimetres the hookbolt or latch binds against its strike.
The fix
If a key has just snapped in your lock, the most helpful thing you can do is nothing further to the lock. Keep the half in your hand, note whether the door is locked, and resist the tweezers and the glue, both of which push the piece deeper and add material the locksmith must clear first.
The fix
In a rental or condo the repair involves more than one set of hands. A tenant reports the break-in to the landlord or property manager, who normally arranges the work, because landlords are responsible for repairs and both sides have rules about changing locks and sharing keys.

The fix
A lock rarely seizes without warning. It asks for a wiggle, then a firmer wiggle, then it needs the door pulled toward you, and one morning it stops.

When a key disappears, cutting yourself another copy solves the wrong half of the problem. You can get in again, but so can whoever finds the original.

Mailbox locks are small, but a mailbox is where the bank statements arrive, so we take them seriously. Most residential boxes take a standard cam lock that can be swapped without fuss once the box is confirmed as yours; multi-unit buildings usually need the property manager's go-ahead first. We match the new lock to the box, cut two keys, and note the code for the future.

A locksmith who listens. The job starts with your description, not our assumptions. What you have noticed about the door often points to the cause before we touch it.
Honest about what is worth doing. Some hardware deserves saving and some does not. We tell you which and why, so you spend on what makes a difference.
Left better than found. The door works, the area is clean and you have keys, notes and a clear idea of what to watch for. That is the standard for every visit.

Choosing a service is easier when you know what each one actually changes. Rekeying changes the key, replacement changes the hardware, repair keeps what you have working, and installation adds something new. The sections below sort our work along those lines.

You signed the lease on the unit last week and the landlord handed over possession, but the previous tenant's locks are still on both doors and no keys came with them. Your fixtures arrive tomorrow and the doors will not open.
3 / 3
You have just signed the lease on a unit the previous tenant ran for a decade. The landlord handed over three keys, the back door wears a padlock nobody can open, and nobody can say how many front-door keys are still out there.
ThenReplace it with a weather-rated padlock.
A shrouded shackle and a drainage-friendly body cope with rain and salt far better than an indoor lock left outside.
ThenA hasp and a proper padlock.
The hasp matters as much as the lock; fitted with carriage bolts it resists prying.
ThenReplace the mailbox lock and cut new keys.
With proof the box is yours, the cam lock swaps out cleanly and you get two keys for it.

Has it been forced, does it drag, who has had keys? Those answers tell us whether the frame, the cylinder or the key list needs attention first.

Reinforcing what takes the blow. A box strike and three-inch screws into the studs, long hinge screws, and filled holes where the wood has split, before any cylinder is changed.
Testing every key in every lock. Doors open, doors closed, both sides, then a push on the locked door to feel for play. We finish by writing down what was fitted.

52%
Older homes. About 52% of homes in London were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
Period hardware on older homes deserves matching parts, not a mismatched modern set. A locksmith who works among such houses keeps finishes and styles that suit them, so a repaired or replaced lock still looks like it belongs to the door.
49%
A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 49% of homes in London (2021 Census).
Mixed housing means a locksmith sees a bungalow in the morning and a condo tower in the afternoon. The stocked van has house-door deadbolts, suite-door cylinders and the finishes for each, so neither kind of customer waits for a second visit.
The push is a sign the bolt and the strike pocket are out of line, which is a door and frame matter more than a lock fault. A new deadbolt is welcome if the old one is worn, but the visit also adjusts the strike, deepens the pocket or tightens hinges so the bolt throws freely with the door simply closed. Done together, the door locks with a fingertip and the new hardware works as designed.
Yes. Sliding doors take a replacement mortise hook lock sized to the rail, often with a keyed exterior, and benefit from a secondary foot bolt or a pin through the frames. French doors are secured by treating the inactive leaf properly with flush bolts into the head and sill, then fitting a deadbolt to the active leaf with a strike into that reinforced edge. Both are routine parts of a residential upgrade.
Yes. The deadbolt and the knob or lever are separate locks in separate bores, so one can be replaced while the other stays. The new deadbolt can be pinned to work on the same key as the knob if the keyways are compatible, and its finish can be matched to the knob so the door looks intended. Replacing the deadbolt first is a sensible order, since it does most of the securing.
A photo of each door's lock from inside and outside, the type of door, whether there is glass nearby and roughly how many keys are in circulation. For a business, a sketch of the doors and who needs to reach each area saves a great deal of time. Mention any door that sticks, has been forced or has a closer or push bar on it. With that, the locksmith arrives with the right formats and a plan to discuss.
